2008-12-15 [arthemis_]: Bit confused here. So if I like say make a piece with polymere clay, of my own design, and take a photo of it (because otherwise I cannot upload it), it would be considered photography?

It think I'm sticking with drawing then, 3D is a little complicated this way :P

Everyone knows that the winning pieces are shown on the Mainstreet and it's easy to see that this page can be viewed by not logged in persons just like most of the wiki-pages on Elftown and of course the Mainstreet.

To answer the question: The pages are exported because the ones entering them want to show non-Elftowners the contests they are competing in and the contests are good marketing for Elftown itself.

2008-12-16 [Artsieladie]: The official contest pages that I've seen have been exported for quite some time now.

Just because Elftown pages are exported, I don't think this says that Elftown is no longer a community. Even 'real life' communities do not keep everything under lock and key. In fact, they want outside visitors and new residents, because this is part of a community's growth. Without growth, a community will eventually become a ghost town. I certainly do not want Elftown to become a ghost town!

Everyone has the choice to enter these competitions or not. The exporting of the contest pages is clearly visible for all to see. This is the first time, though, that 'I've' heard anyone complain about the exporting of the contest pages. I'm not saying that no one has. I'm just saying it's the first time that 'I' have heard this.

I'm also assuming then (I could be wrong) that you would never want your art exhibited in a 'real life' gallery either? Exhibiting your art anywhere exposes it to others, whether it be inside or outside of Elftown. With everyone using the internet, real life galleries are also displaying the art in their galleries online.

I'm also guessing that if your art won, then you would what, decline the win, so your piece couldn't/wouldn't get displayed on probably the most viewable Elftown page by the outside world, Mainstreet?

I do understand your thinking however, because I used to be fearful of the same, but then I realised, well, actually Hedda made me realise, that if I'm going to get my work noticed, then it's a chance one must take. People can't see or know what you have to offer, if they can't 'see' it. A perfect example: If my Pegasus wasn't exported, I wouldn't have the art work that I'm getting paid for to do right now. There is risk involved, but life is a risk anyway. My work as been stolen, but even so, you can't assume that that will always be the case. ;P

2008-12-16 [Paul Doyle]: I think it's in everyone's best interest that public sections of ET get advertised to the outside world. Maybe a SF/fantasy lover will stumble across this contest, get curious about Elftown itself---and then join and be a productive member of ET? (And maybe they'll spread the word to likeminded folk?) I think exporting public ET pages is a fantastic idea :)

Even if the page is not exported, those who want harm will find a way :) Safety on Internet is like non-existing. That's why we have watermarks and signatures and stuff.

Anyways...
I'm going to start on my Christmas entry!
